Texas Here we come

I am getting ready for me and Andrew to leave for Texas on Wednesday!!! We are very excited to see Andrew's grandmothers and GREAT grandmothers. We love you very very much. I was just wondering if anyone has any great tips, or lessons learned, about how to travel with an infant. It will just be me and the boy on the way there. Rusty comes a week later, and then another week later we all fly back together. I know that there are some words of wisdom out there... so let me have them!!

Ok so the secret is to just carry the baby in the ergo and the diaper bag on the plane. one, two, that's it. Check a suitcase for you, suitcase for him, and the carseat. Forget the stroller all together. You can just ergo him everywhere you go. And don't be shy about breastfeeding on the plane, just bring your little cover thing. You have to feed him on take off and landing for his ears. Don't forget to put a few plastic bags in the diaper bag in case he soils his clothes. Also if you put dirty diapers in the plastic bag, the flight attendants will not mind throwing it away for you. I'll let you know if I remember anything else. Have fun!

the biggest thing is keeping his ears open during take off and landing by him sucking whether thats feeding him or sucking on a pacifier!! The other thing is pack light so you don't have to carry so much. Also, when we took anjela on the plane we kept her awake as long as we could in the car and airport until we got her on the plane and she slept the entire time.

I totally agree with everything Sarah said - the less you bring on the plane, the better. Not sure if you have a ring sling, but don't use it in the airport. The metal rings set off the metal detector and they make you take the baby out to go through. Also, the rule is that you are supposed to hold Andrew on your lap during take-off and landing. You can't have him in a carrier. BUT, I just put my nursing cover over me and let Joel suck on my finger and no one was bold enough to peek under there to see if he was in a carrier or not!

the first time i traveled with kate she was 4 months old and we had a 2 hour layover...
i agree with your friends on everything they said but here's a different idea if you have a travel system: we have one and so once we parked i snapped kate (while in her carseat) into the stroller, put the diaper bag (the only carry-on item i took) in the stroller basket and headed to the check-in...once i checked our luggage, i removed kate from the carseat (checking it as well) and switched her over to the stroller...then i used the stroller in the airport because 1) you get to bypass the typically long and cumbersome security line and go to the front and then you just push it all the way to the airplane door where you then take out the baby, load the plane and then the workers take the stroller and put in under the plane so you don't have to mess with it after that and 2) even though i love my sling kate still got heavy even as a 4 month old in it after carrying her a while, and if you add a diaper bag to that (even a light one) my arms would be ready to fall off...but i'm pretty weak and so that's why i opted for the stroller. it held everything for me! and it even fit with me in those handicapped stalls when i had to go to the bathroom...i never felt too bulky or sorry for taking it but that's just me and everyone is different in their preferences and the type of baby gear they have.

it is of utter importance to try and time their feeding and sleeping during the flight so that they're not super fussy...your schedule is gonna be off anyways since you are going back two hours. ours was too so don't worry about that - it'll only stress you out...just aim to keep andrew comfy and you'll do great!!! at least being nearly 4 months old means he won't be squirming to get down and crawl like kate was on our most recent flight home...eee!!! that was fun!

okay if i think of anything else, i'll let you know...jennifer
